Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here's our most common questions and answers from customers.

Retro Gaming

Generally speaking, any game released at least 15 to 20 years ago qualifies as retro — though plenty of collectors apply a stricter definition and reserve the term for games from the 80s and 90s. Here at Retro Sales we don't get too precious about labels. If it brings back memories, runs on older hardware, or simply isn't available on modern platforms, it's retro enough for us.

The short answer: if you're asking whether we stock it, chances are we do. Check our latest arrivals to see what's come in recently.

There are a few ways to stay in the loop:

  • NewsletterJoin us for exclusive discounts, new stock alerts, and retro gaming news delivered straight to your inbox.
  • #FreshStock — Check our new arrivals page regularly. We receive trade-ins daily so new stock is always coming in.
  • Social Media — Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for updates, showcases, and the occasional giveaway.
  • Blog — Our Retro Gaming News blog covers collecting tips, console guides, and industry news.

Like retro games, the definition varies depending on who you ask. A common benchmark is anything over 15 to 20 years old — which by that measure now includes the PlayStation 2, original Xbox, and GameCube. Stricter collectors reserve the term for pre-2000 hardware like the Mega Drive, SNES, Nintendo 64, and original PlayStation.

At Retro Sales we stock hardware spanning the full spectrum — from Atari and early SEGA all the way through to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era machines. If it runs on cartridges, discs, or needs a power supply that's no longer manufactured, we probably have something for it.

Not sure if we stock your console? Browse by console or contact us and we'll point you in the right direction.

Absolutely — and right now is a great time to be buying. The retro gaming market has grown steadily for years and the trend shows no signs of reversing. Games and consoles that seemed affordable a decade ago are now changing hands for multiples of their original price, and that trajectory is continuing.

Complete-in-box games, cult classics, and hardware from beloved platforms like the SNES, Mega Drive, and PlayStation 1 have all seen serious appreciation. The difference between buying now and waiting another five years could be significant.

Our advice? Don't overthink it. If you've been eyeing something up, the best time to grab it is before someone else does. We receive trade-ins daily and the best pieces move fast.

Check our latest arrivals — you never know what's just come in.

If they're sitting in a box in the garage not being played, it's worth considering a trade-in. You could turn that forgotten collection into cash in your pocket or store credit toward something you actually want to play.

We're always buying — games, consoles, and accessories in any condition, working or not. We make fair, no-fuss offers and if you opt for store credit rather than cash we'll give you even more value for your items. It's a great way to upgrade your collection without spending a cent.

Don't let your retro gear gather dust when it could be funding your next favourite game.

Find out what your collection is worth here

It's simple. Here's how it works:

  1. Get in touch — Head to our trade-in page and tell us what you have. The more detail the better — condition, accessories included, whether it's tested and working.
  2. Get an offer — We'll come back to you with a fair offer for cash or store credit. Store credit always gets you more value so it's worth considering if there's anything on the site you've had your eye on.
  3. Send it in — Once you're happy with the offer, send your items to our Melbourne warehouse. We cover the assessment and get everything processed quickly.
  4. Get paid — Cash straight to your account or store credit applied immediately. Simple as that.

We buy everything from complete boxed sets to loose cartridges, working consoles to ones in need of repair. If you're not sure whether we'd be interested, just ask — we're always happy to take a look.

About Us

Retro Sales was born out of frustration. Our founder spent years buying retro games and consoles on eBay — dealing with inflated prices, dishonest sellers, and items that arrived nothing like described. Eventually enough was enough.

In 2014 Retro Sales launched with a simple mission: to create a trusted destination where retro gaming collectors could buy with confidence, at fair prices, from people who actually know and love the hobby. No price gouging, no mystery condition items, no dodgy listings.

Over a decade later we're still 100% Australian owned and operated, still based in Melbourne, and still run by a small passionate team who test, refurbish, and ship everything themselves. We've expanded well beyond our original range — from classic cartridge era hardware all the way through to current generation consoles — but the mission hasn't changed.

We're also the manufacturers of the RSA-Series power supplies, Australia's only locally made certified replacement power supplies for retro game consoles.

If you ever want to chat retro gaming, have a question about a specific item, or just want to know what's come through the warehouse lately — get in touch. We love hearing from fellow collectors.

Yes — 100% Australian owned and operated. Retro Sales was founded in Melbourne in 2014 and we've been helping Australian collectors find, preserve, and play retro hardware ever since. We're not a marketplace or a dropshipper — we're a small passionate team who test, refurbish, and ship everything ourselves. All stock is stored in our Melbourne warehouse for fast, immediate shipping.

Honestly, we love running an online-only store — it keeps our overheads low and lets us pass those savings directly on to our customers with better prices every day. We've watched competitors open and close physical stores over the years and noticed how much higher their prices tend to be. A shopfront is expensive to run, and someone has to pay for it — usually the customer at the counter.

That said, never say never. If the right opportunity comes along and it makes sense for us and our customers, we'd love to have a space where collectors could come and browse in person. Watch this space.

In the meantime, join our newsletter at retrosales.com.au/pages/newsletter to stay up to date with everything we're up to.

We're a small passionate team and we don't always have positions available — but we're always interested in hearing from people who genuinely love retro gaming and want to be part of what we're building.

If that sounds like you, send your resume and a note about yourself to careers@retrosales.com.au. Tell us what you're passionate about, what consoles you grew up with, and what you think you could bring to the team. We read every application.

You can also keep an eye on our careers page for any current openings.

Products

Yes — every item we sell is tested, cleaned, and refurbished by our Melbourne team before it ships. For full details on our testing and refurbishment process see our answer to "Are the consoles tested and working?" above.

Both — it depends on the product.

The majority of our games and consoles are pre-owned and have been professionally cleaned, tested, and refurbished by our Melbourne team before sale. We grade all pre-owned items so you know exactly what condition to expect before you buy.

We also stock a range of brand new items including accessories, power supplies, cartridge cleaners, and collectables. Our in-house RSA-Series power supplies are manufactured new by us specifically for retro game consoles.

Every product listing clearly states whether an item is new or pre-owned so there are no surprises. If you have any questions about a specific item's condition before purchasing just get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au and we'll give you an honest answer.

For new items — yes, what you see is what you get.

For pre-owned items, product images on our website are representative of the item you will receive but may not be the exact unit. Here at Retro Sales we just give you a simple, easy and trustworthy place to buy video games. Here's what that means in practice:

  • Grading — We grade all pre-owned games with Good, Very Good, and Excellent so you know exactly what you're buying before you order. A full description of what each grade means is available on all game pages.
  • In Stock — Everything listed on our site is in our Melbourne warehouse ready for immediate dispatch. No waiting on suppliers or drop shipping delays.
  • Customer Service — Technical presales advice and outstanding after sales support from people who actually know retro hardware.
  • Variety — Huge range of retro video games, consoles, spare parts, accessories, and power supplies all in one place.
  • Repairs — Australia's only video game console repair shop endorsed by major brands including PixelFX.
  • Australian — Founded and run by Aussies who are genuinely passionate about the retro gaming community.

If you'd like more information or specific photos of an item before purchasing, just get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au and we'll do our best to help.

Yes — every console we sell is cleaned, tested, and refurbished by our team in Melbourne before it ships to you. We don't list anything we wouldn't be happy to play ourselves.

Game cartridges and disc-based games go through the same process. Cart pins and contacts are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol to ensure reliable booting, and disc-based games are inspected and resurfaced where needed.

We also replace save game batteries inside cartridges as a matter of course — so when you buy a game from us that has an internal save battery, it's been replaced and tested. You won't lose your saves unexpectedly. The same applies to internal batteries found inside certain consoles, which we replace before sale.

One tip we always share with customers — even on games and consoles you already own — is to keep a bottle of isopropyl alcohol handy for cleaning cart slots and contacts. It's available from Bunnings and is the single best thing you can do to keep your retro hardware running reliably. We also stock cartridge cleaners which are a great addition to any collector's toolkit.

For a full guide on how to clean your game cartridges the right way, see our blog post — The Best Way to Clean Your Game Cartridges.

If you ever receive an item that isn't performing as expected, contact us at info@retrosales.com.au and we'll sort it out.

Yes — all games and accessories that contain internal save batteries are replaced and tested before sale as standard practice. You won't lose your saves unexpectedly on a game purchased from us.

We also replace internal batteries found inside certain consoles before they go out the door.

If you have a game or console you already own that needs a battery replacement, we offer a save battery replacement service — send it in to our Melbourne workshop and we'll sort it out for you.

Every single day. We receive multiple trade-ins daily at our Melbourne warehouse which means our range is constantly rotating with games, consoles, and accessories we haven't had before.

The best way to stay across new arrivals is to:

If there's something specific you're hunting for that we don't currently have, sign up for a back-in-stock notification on the product page or get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au.

Yes — on any sold out product page simply look for the Email me when available button, enter your email address and you'll be automatically notified the moment that item is back in stock. No need to keep checking back manually.

We receive trade-ins daily so stock levels change constantly. If something you want is sold out today it may well be back sooner than you think.

It's also worth bookmarking our New Arrivals page and checking in regularly — fresh stock is added daily and the best pieces move fast.

If the item you're looking for doesn't appear on our website at all, get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au — there are thousands of products we haven't yet listed and you never know what might be sitting in the warehouse waiting to go live.

For pre-owned games and consoles, our second-hand stock comes through trade-ins and private purchases which means we can't always predict what's coming in next. However there are two ways we can help:

  • Back-in-stock notifications — if there's a pre-owned item you're looking for that we don't currently have in stock, sign up for a notification on the product page and we'll email you the moment it comes through.
  • Pre-orders — we sometimes open pre-orders on unusual or hard to find consoles and accessories. If you see a Pre-Order button instead of the usual Add to Cart on a product page, that item is available to order and typically arrives within one month.

For new accessories, power supplies, and other new stock items get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au and we'll do our best to help through our supplier network.

Unfortunately we're not able to hold items as we operate exclusively online and our stock is available to all customers at the same time. Popular items can sell quickly — especially rare or hard to find pieces — so if you've got your eye on something we'd recommend securing it sooner rather than later.

If you're not quite ready to buy but don't want to miss out, here are a few options:

  • Add to cart — adding an item to your cart doesn't reserve it but it keeps it handy while you decide.
  • Afterpay or Klarna — if budget is the concern, both options let you spread the cost with no interest so you can secure the item now and pay over time.
  • Get in touch — if you have a specific question about an item before committing, contact us at info@retrosales.com.au and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible.

Not always — and we think it's important to be upfront about this rather than give you a blanket yes.

The majority of what we sell is PAL format and fully compatible with Australian consoles and TVs straight out of the box. However we also stock Japanese (NTSC-J) and American (NTSC-U) hardware and games which may require additional steps to run on Australian systems depending on the console.

  • PAL items — fully compatible with Australian hardware with no modifications required.
  • NTSC-J and NTSC-U games — may require a region modded console, flash cartridge, or adapter to run on a PAL system.
  • NTSC consoles — will generally work on modern Australian TVs via composite or HDMI but may display in 60Hz rather than 50Hz.
  • Power supplies — Japanese and American consoles run on different voltages. Our RSA-Series replacement power supplies handle voltage conversion internally so no step-down transformer is needed. See our power supply compatibility guide for full details.

Every product listing notes the region so you always know what you're buying. If you're unsure whether a specific item will work with your setup, get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au before purchasing and we'll give you an honest answer.

We grade all pre-owned games using a simple three tier system — Good, Very Good, and Excellent — so you know exactly what to expect before you buy. No surprises on arrival.

A full description of what each grade means is available on every game listing page, as the specifics can vary depending on the type of game and format. We encourage you to read the grade description and listing notes carefully before purchasing.

A few things that apply across all grades:

  • All items are fully tested and working before sale
  • Save batteries are replaced as standard
  • Cart pins and contacts are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol
  • If you'd like specific photos of an individual item before purchasing get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au and we'll do our best to help

Yes — all products sold by Retro Sales come with a 12 month warranty. If an item develops a fault within that period we'll offer a repair, replacement, or refund depending on the situation.

For new items a standard 12 month manufacturer warranty applies. For pre-owned and refurbished items our own 12 month Retro Sales warranty covers you against faults and items not performing as described.

Our in-house RSA-Series power supplies also carry a 12 month warranty backed directly by us as the manufacturer.

Please note that warranty does not cover physical damage, liquid damage, tampering, or faults resulting from incorrect use such as connecting the wrong power supply to a console.

See our full refund policy for complete details.

We want every customer to be happy with their purchase. If an item arrives faulty or doesn't perform as described, we'll make it right — just get in touch with us directly at info@retrosales.com.au and we'll walk you through the process.

Our stock comes from a variety of sources which is part of what keeps our range interesting and our prices competitive.

The majority of our pre-owned games, consoles, and accessories come from customer trade-ins. We receive multiple trade-ins every day at our Melbourne warehouse which means fresh stock is constantly coming through — sometimes rare and unexpected pieces that you won't find anywhere else.

We also source new and sealed stock from third party suppliers, import directly from Japan where the retro gaming market is particularly strong and well preserved, and work with a carefully selected group of hand-picked warehouses in China that we've vetted for quality and reliability.

Our in-house power supplies and accessories are manufactured under the Retro Sales RSA brand — so when you buy an RSA power supply you're buying direct from the maker with full warranty support.

Power Supplies

Finding the right power supply for your retro console is important — using the wrong voltage or polarity can permanently damage your hardware. We've put together a comprehensive compatibility guide covering over 90 retro consoles to make it easy.

Our RSA-Series power supplies cover the vast majority of popular retro consoles including the NES, Super Nintendo, Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Master System, PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo AES, Atari Jaguar, and many more — all running directly from Australian 240V mains power with no step-down transformer required.

See our full Power Supply Compatibility Guide to find the correct model for your console, or browse our power supply range directly.

If you're not sure which supply suits your console, get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au before ordering and we'll point you in the right direction.

RS Certified is our designation for power supplies that hold full Australian electrical safety certification. RS stands for Retro Sales — so when you see RS Certified on a listing, you're buying a power supply made by us that has been independently tested and certified to Australian standards.

Our RS Certified units hold full electrical safety certification under Global-Mark Certificate of Conformity GMA-521591-EA, certified to AS/NZS 62368.1:2022 and compliant with AS/NZS 3112:2017. Yes — but the answer varies depending on which category of power supply you are purchasing from us. We stock three distinct categories and each listing clearly states which applies.

RS Certified Units — Our RSA-Series units hold full Australian electrical safety certification under Global-Mark Certificate GMA-521591-EA, certified to AS/NZS 62368.1:2022. Specialist Aftermarket Replacement Units — These are new high quality replacement units featuring AU-compliant insulated mains pins and reinforced safety shielding — the same units we use daily in our own store. They have not been submitted for EESS product registration and do not carry RCM marking. They are supplied on that basis.

Original Vintage Units — Original manufacturer power supplies from the 1980s and 1990s are sold strictly as collectable or display items. They may have non-insulated mains pins and aged internal components. They are not approved for connection to Australian mains power.

See our Legal Notice for full compliance details and our Power Supply Compatibility Guide to find the right unit for your console.

Original Vintage Units — Genuine manufacturer power supplies from the 1980s and 1990s produced by companies such as Nintendo, SEGA, SNK, and Atari. These are sold strictly as collectable or display items. They may have non-insulated mains pins and aged internal components that present safety risks. They are not approved for connection to Australian mains power.

Every listing on our site clearly identifies which category applies. See our Legal Notice for full compliance details.

Trade Ins

Trade-in values vary depending on the item, its condition, and current market demand. As a general rule:

  • Complete items — consoles or games that include all original accessories, cables, manuals, and original packaging attract the highest trade-in values.
  • Loose items — games or consoles without original packaging or accessories are still welcome and we'll make a fair offer based on condition and demand.
  • Faulty or untested items — we still buy these, though the offer will reflect the cost of repair or refurbishment on our end.

We offer two ways to be paid for your trade-in:

  • Cash — paid directly to your bank account once we've assessed your items.
  • Store credit — we always offer more value as store credit than cash, so if there's anything on the site you've had your eye on it's worth considering.

The best way to get an accurate estimate is to get in touch with us directly. Send us a list of what you have, the condition of each item, and any relevant details and we'll come back to you with an offer.

Start your trade-in here

Yes — we buy consoles and games in any condition, including faulty, broken, or untested items. Don't throw anything away before checking with us first.

What we mean by tested
When we ask whether a console is tested and working, we mean more than just powering on to the dashboard or menu. Ideally we want to know that it actually reads and plays games correctly — disc-based consoles should load and play discs without errors, and cartridge consoles should reliably read carts.

Broken consoles are welcome
We do buy broken consoles and repair them ourselves — so don't assume a faulty unit has no value. However we can't pay full price for items that need work, as the cost of repair needs to be factored into our offer.

Be honest about condition
Let us know upfront if an item is faulty, untested, or missing parts. We'd rather know before we make an offer than discover it on arrival.

We reserve the right to decline
Not everything will meet our buying criteria. We reserve the right to decline items that don't meet our standards or that we simply don't have demand for at the time.

Yes — we love hearing from people looking to sell large collections or estates. Some of our best and most interesting stock has come from collectors who have spent decades building their libraries and are ready to pass them on to new homes.

Whether you have a dozen items or several hundred, we're happy to take a look. Here's how it typically works:

  1. Get in touch — Send us a list or photos of what you have to info@retrosales.com.au. The more detail the better — condition, completeness, rough quantities, and any notable or rare pieces.
  2. We'll assess and respond — We'll come back to you with an expression of interest and if we're keen to proceed, we'll arrange to assess the collection in more detail.
  3. We make an offer — Bulk lots are assessed as a whole. Offers will reflect the mix of items, overall condition, and current market demand.
  4. Get paid — Cash to your bank account or store credit at an enhanced rate — your choice.

Estate collections are handled with care and sensitivity. If you're dealing with a deceased estate and need a straightforward, honest assessment without the hassle of listing items individually, we're here to help.

Get in touch here or email us directly at info@retrosales.com.au.

Browse all repair services

  1. Find your repair service — Browse our repair services page and select the service that matches your console and fault. If you're not sure what's wrong, start with our Console Repair Appraisal Service.
  2. Check the postage address — Repairs are carried out across our Victoria and Queensland workshops. The correct postage address is listed on each individual repair service page — please read this carefully before sending.
  3. Pack it well — Pack your console securely with adequate padding. We recommend using the original box if you have it or a sturdy box with bubble wrap. We cannot be held responsible for damage caused by inadequate packaging in transit.
  4. Include everything — Include a note with your name, email address, order number, and a brief description of the fault. Please also include your power supply and all cables — we like to test the complete setup as a whole to ensure everything is working correctly together once the repair is complete.
  5. Ship with tracking — Always use a tracked postage service. We recommend Australia Post with signature on delivery for peace of mind.
  6. We'll be in touch — Once we receive your console our technicians will assess it and contact you with an update before any work begins.

Browse all repair services or get in touch at info@retrosales.com.au if you have any questions before sending.

Repair turnaround times vary depending on the type of repair, the complexity of the fault, and how busy our workshops are at the time. As a general guide:

  • Simple repairs — such as save battery replacement, lens cleaning, or controller repairs typically turn around within 1-2 weeks of receiving your console.
  • Complex repairs — such as capacitor replacement, power supply conversion, HDMI mod installation, or fault diagnosis may take 2-4 weeks depending on parts availability and workshop load.
  • Appraisal service — if you've sent your console in for a repair appraisal we will contact you with a diagnosis and quote before proceeding with any work, which may add a few days to the overall turnaround.

We'll always keep you updated on the status of your repair. If you have a specific deadline, let us know at the time of sending and we'll do our best to accommodate.
