In 1996, SEGA released the Sega Saturn 3D Control Pad, a revolutionary controller designed to elevate your gameplay experience.  Known by various names around the globe, including the Sega Multi Controller (Japan), Samsung Multi Pad (South Korea), and Joystick 3D (Brazil), this innovative peripheral introduced analog control to the Saturn, opening up new possibilities for precision and immersion.

Debuting alongside NiGHTS into Dreams..., the 3D Control Pad marked a significant departure from traditional D-pad-centric controllers. Its analog thumbstick, reminiscent of the earlier Japanese-exclusive Sega Mega Drive XE-1AP controller, provided a greater degree of accuracy in 3D environments, a crucial advancement as 3D games became increasingly prevalent in the mid-1990s.

Enhanced Control for the 3D Era:

Building upon the standard Saturn Control Pad, the 3D Control Pad retained the familiar eight-directional D-pad and six face buttons (A, B, C, X, Y, Z, and START).  However, the key innovation was the addition of the analog thumbstick (Sega termed it the "3D Directional Pad"), strategically positioned above the D-pad for left-hand access.  Furthermore, the controller introduced analog L and R shoulder triggers, a groundbreaking feature for mainstream game controllers.

Seamless Compatibility:

To ensure compatibility with existing Saturn titles, the 3D Control Pad included a convenient "Digital/Analogue" mode switch located beneath the start button.  Switching to "Digital" mode disabled all analog functionality, effectively transforming the controller into a standard Saturn control pad.  This crucial feature prevented conflicts with older games that weren't designed to recognize analog input, a challenge also faced by the original PlayStation and its dual-analog controllers.  The detachable lead also offered convenient storage.

A Controller Ahead of Its Time:

Sega used Hall-effect sensors where Nintendo used traditional analogue wheels and gears (similar to an old ball-mouse or trackball). Sega’s Hall-effect sensors utilised magnets and magnetic sensors to detect the position of the shoulder triggers and 3D nipple. Simple, effective, and they didn’t wear out in a few hours like Nintendo’s N64 stick did.

Despite its innovative design, the 3D Control Pad didn't achieve widespread adoption, mirroring the Saturn's own struggles in Western markets.  The Saturn's relatively limited 3D capabilities, coupled with the fact that the 3D Control Pad was never bundled with the console, meant that many consumers remained comfortable with the standard Saturn control pad. The larger size and arguably less comfortable design for certain game genres also contributed to its limited popularity. Even in Japan, where the Saturn enjoyed greater success, the 3D Control Pad wasn't widely supported by games, although some developers, like KID, continued to support it even after the Dreamcast's release.
